Goals from Nicola Kalinic, Jason Roberts and Gael Givet gave Blackburn Rovers a convincing 3-0 win over Bolton at Ewood Park.

It was from a Pedersen corner that Rovers had their first chance of the game on 23 minutes. Keith Andrews met the cross at the near post and saw his header cleared off the line before Nikola Kalinic volleyed the rebound off the post.

Rovers suffered a blow on 38 minutes when captain Ryan Nelsen hobbled off with a knee injury - but were given a boost when they took the lead four minutes later. Steven N’Zonzi’s long ball was headed down by Junior Hoilett into the path of Croatia striker Kalinic, whose low drive deflected in off Zat Knight.

Bolton begun the second half the better side and could have equalised on 58 minutes but Chung-Yong Lee’s snap-shot from the edge of the area was well saved by Paul Robinson.

It was Rovers who netted next though as more poor defending let the Trotters down on 73 minutes. Pedersen’s corner wasn’t properly cleared and when the ball was lobbed back in substitute Jason Roberts was completely unmarked six yards out and volleyed first-time past Jaaskelainen.

The game was well and truly over on 84 minutes when Gael Givet rose unmarked at the far post to head home El-Hadj Diouf’s left-wing cross. The win puts Rovers safe in mid-table 11 points ahead of their near neighbours Bolton who remain deep in trouble in 19th place.

Nathan Delfouneso ensured that Martin O’Neill’s decision to make seven FA Cup changes did not result in another first-hurdle failure for Aston Villa. Villa have exited the competition at the third-round stage six times in the last eight seasons, but young striker Delfouneso set them on their way after 12 minutes with a close-range header.

Blackburn Rovers made nine changes of their own and their hopes were not improved by El Hadj Diouf’s wreckless challenge on Habib Beye, which resulted in a red card, moments after Carlos Cuellar had headed in an Ashley Young free-kick.

David Dunn also had a penalty saved by Brad Guzan before Nikola Kalinic reduced the arrears, only for John Carew to add a third for Villa from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Gael Givet.

A penalty miss from Dexter Blackstock summed up Nottingham Forest’s evening as Blackburn Rovers progressed into the fourth round of the Carling Cup despite riding their luck at the City Ground.

Sam Allardyce’s side triumphed 1-0 as a Benni McCarthy saw a free-kick delivery into the box - which looked to be more cross than shot - arc over everyone and high into the net in the 37th minute. But despite dominating for long periods, this was a night when Forest just couldn’t find the back of the net with Jason Brown’s penalty save from Blackstock in the 73rd minute the most wasteful moment. Forest had paid the price for missed chances against Blackpool in the Championship on Saturday and the theme was continued in painful fashion against the Premier League side.

The home side almost entirely dominated the first half hour, but still ended up going into the interval behind. Blackstock bundled an instant shot straight into the arms of keeper Brown early on following a powerful header across goal from Joe Garner. Rovers skipper Ryan Nelsen produced a goal-saving tackle to deny Robert Earnshaw after the little striker had instantly controlled a fine cross from Nathan Tyson on the edge of the six-yard box.

The second half began in more even fashion but it was still the home side who looked the more likely to score as Lynch and Chris Gunter delivered telling crosses from the opposing flanks, with Nelsen producing another timely interception to deny Earnshaw a chance. Rovers came close to adding a second as Nikola Kalinic showed a flash of quality with a smart turn and shot that flashed narrowly wide.

Forest missed the best chance of all to level when they were awarded a penalty when Steven Reid handled in the box. However, Brown plunged low to his left to palm away Blackstock’s spot-kick in the 73rd minute to book his side’s passage into the fourth round.

Blackburn Rovers suffered a 3-0 away defeat at the hands of Everton at Goodison Park. Former Manchester United forward Louis Saha was the hero, netting in either half before defender Joseph Yobo put the match out of sight and heaped misery on visiting boss Sam Allardyce.

The Toffees were in control of the match right from the off, and it was no surprise to see them take the lead through the boot of Saha after 22 minutes. Leighton Baines floated in a low free-kick, and the Frenchman deftly side footed the ball into the net to give the home side an early advantage. Rovers simply did not have the attacking quality in the final third to offer Everton any kind of threat, and this difference in quality was further outlined in the second half as Saha doubled the lead. Marouane Fellaini swung in a teasing delivery, and Saha leapt powerfully to nod the ball home and put Everton out of sight.

Saha’s prefect afternoon was complete just four minutes later, as his near-post flick was bundled over the line by Joesph Yobo to give Everton a three-goal lead and leave Rovers with an impossible task to get back into the match. It was a morale boosting win for Moyes’ side, who built on their demolition of AEK Athens in the Europa League in midweek, while Blackburn will have to improve significantly if they want to avoid a relegation tussle this season.
